Florals and spring are two words that commonly go together; this isn’t news to anyone. However, your view on whether or not you like them or can pull them off, might be. Typically, when I would think florals, I think super dainty and overly feminine prints. There’s no sass or attitude in the print. Honestly, when I thought florals, I thought of a plain-Jane, soccer mom with five kids and a minivan. Weird and perhaps harsh opinion of a simple pattern, I know. I find myself drawn to more statement pieces or colors, something that would get noticed and speak to my vivacity. I didn’t think that was florals until I found this dress. After figuring out these styling tips, I refer to my pre-floral days as BFE-before floral era.

If you’re like BFE me and don’t think that florals are your style, believe me, I understand. For those who do like florals, I’m jealous that I didn’t jump in the bandwagon sooner, like you! If you fall in either category, these tips can help you style floral in a fun, sassy, and feminine way.

1. Style is everything. Choose a piece that has a cut that you like. If you like plunging necklines, maybe choose a maxi dress that shows some skin with a sexy plunging neckline. Instant sass, ladies! Florals are more commonly associated with conservative styles, I find, so look for pieces that have a cut you like or a shape that fits your body well. For me, I liked that the pictured dress had a fun neck tie and shorter hem. So, I felt it was conservative and retro up top, but it stayed playful with the shorter length and bust-extenuation. If you’re wearing a style that you feel confident in, it’s easy to rock any pattern trend!

2. Pairing is caring. If want that feminine sassy look, then pair a dainty floral pattern with something chic: a moto jacket, a grunge-style platform bootie, or a newsboy hat, etc. Your floral can be a background to showcase your accessories, perhaps. You keep the femininity of the pattern, but juxtapose it with something more masculine/modern/or whatever look you want to incorporate. This way, you can still stick to your style, but add the softer floral touch to it. In my floral outfit, I wanted to keep it more trendy and retro, so I added the cat eye classes, white booties (another must-have for spring), and this newsboy cap. I felt it added a little edge to the daintiness. A simple floral piece can achieve many different looks depending on your accessories, so play around to create some really fun looks.

3. Color is key. Play with the color of your floral pieces. More muted, pastel pieces are going to look more feminine and softer. If your personality is more bold and boisterous, then find floral patterns that are louder colors, like this dress I’m wearing. The vibrance of the colors are loud, confident and that’s what I wanted to give off when I wore this. However, maybe to a wedding, I would choose something softer that blends in and is more romantic. Color can decipher emotions, so choose the feeling you want to give off, and find a floral pattern that you visualize your vibe looking like. The same floral pattern in different colors can give off totally different vibes. So, play with color to evoke different style feels.

These are just a couple of tricks that I’ve found that have completely changed my perception of florals. You can shop my look and similar looks as discussed at the bottom of this post! You’ll definitely see me drenched in florals this season, and I’m actually excited about it, haha. As we continue to get closer and closer to warmer weather (depending on where you live, you might already be enjoying warmer temps), I’ll continue posting on ways to rock spring and summer trends like a pro fashionista-sneak a peak at trends I’ll style for you in the collage below!
